Welcome to the Inverse Problems Young Academy (IPYA)!

Our mission is to engage early-career researchers in the field of Inverse Problems and amplify their voice within the scientific community. If you have any questions about the association, please contact the secretary (Pu-Zhao Kow).

IPYA By-laws (approved by IPYA members on August 29, 2025)

1. Aims of IPYA

The aims of IPYA are:

  1. To give a voice to and encourage participation of early career mathematicians within the Inverse Problems International Association (IPIA);
  2. To promote scientific activities of interest to early-stage researchers to the field of Inverse Problems.

To achieve its aims, IPYA may organize a variety of activities including, but not limited to:

  1. Opportunities to develop research and academic skills;
  2. Facilitating connections among young researchers at various career stages.

2. IPYA Committee

The IPYA Committee acts on behalf of IPYA and is responsible for overseeing the following matters:

  1. Preparing agenda items and convening IPYA meetings;
  2. Executing decisions made at IPYA meetings;
  3. Appointing subordinate committees to carry out specific tasks and activities within IPYA.

2.1 Roles within the IPYA Committee and their duties
The IPYA Committee is comprised of the following roles with associated duties:

  1. Chair. Responsible for presiding over meetings, convening the IPYA Committee, coordinating voting procedures during meetings, representing IPYA, and serving as liaison between IPYA and IPIA.
  2. Vice-chair. Assist the Chair and act on their behalf during absences.
  3. Secretary. Record minutes of meetings (to alternate with the Vice-secretary) and share them with all members. Manage updates to the IPYA website and mailing list.
  4. Vice-secretary. Record minutes of meetings (to alternate with the Secretary) and act on behalf of the Secretary during absences.
  5. Internal Auditors (up to 20 members). Oversee the activities of the IPYA Committee and IPYA to ensure compliance with the by-laws.

The Chair, in conjunction with the Secretary, shall also prepare the meeting agenda and circulate it to all IPYA members at least one week before the meeting.
The minutes of the meetings shall be shared with the IPYA members within one week after each meeting.

2.2 Election of the IPYA Committee
All members may nominate themselves as candidates for any particular role.
IPYA members cannot hold more than one IPYA Committee role at the same time.
Each IPYA Committee member may hold a specific role for up to six months, and may be re-elected in the same or a different position.
The IPYA Committee members can only be elected during general meetings of IPYA.

2.3 Meetings of the IPYA Committee
The IPYA Committee is convened upon necessity by the Chair or Vice-Chair of the IPYA Committee.
The IPYA Committee is allowed to take decisions only during official meetings.
The quorum for meetings of the IPYA Committee is one-half, which must include at least the Chair or Vice-chair.
Decisions of the IPYA Committee, excluding proposals to amend the IPYA By-Laws (see Section 5), shall be by simple majority of votes cast.

3. IPYA general meetings

The aim of IPYA general meetings is to discuss and coordinate the scientific activity of IPYA, as well as appointing roles of the IPYA Committee when necessary.
IPYA general meetings are convened by the Chair or Vice-Chair. All meetings require the presence of the Chair or Vice-Chair, as well as of the Secretary or Vice-Secretary.
The general meetings of IPYA happen regularly on a roughly monthly basis. The date of each meeting is decided during the previous meeting.
The quorum for the general meetings of IPYA is one-half.
Decisions of the IPYA general meetings, excluding proposals to amend the IPYA By-Laws (see Section 5), shall be by simple majority of votes cast.

4. IPYA membership

Election of new IPYA members happens in conjunction with IPIA on a yearly basis.
Each IPYA member shall serve for at most 3 years.
It is allowed to leave IPYA before the 3 years pass.
If the leaving member is holding a role within the IPYA Committee, their role will be filled by election in the next scheduled meeting.

5. Changes to the By-Laws

Any proposal requiring a change to the IPYA By-Laws shall be circulated to all IPYA members at least two weeks in advance.
A quorum of one-half of all IPYA members is required.
Proposals must be approved by a simple two-thirds majority of the quorum.
